The British Royal Family is known for always looking proper, polished, and ready for any occasion. Here are the ten rules they follow, some of which are still relevant today and serve their original purpose, while others have lost their original purpose but serve as symbols or traditions that were in place many years ago.

Rule #1 | NO BARE LEGS

Female members of the royal family should always wear skin-colored tights to look proper and polished. It makes no difference whether it is winter or summer. Tights should be worn at all times.

Rule #2 | NEVER SHOW CLEAVAGE, OR COVER WITH CLUTCH

Female members of the royal family should never reveal their cleavage. Princess Diana wore dresses with exposed cleavage on occasion, but she cleverly concealed it with a clutch.

Rule #3 | SKIRTS AND DRESSES AROUND THE KNEE-LENGTH

Skirts and dresses should be knee-length or three to four inches above the knee. This is approximately 7 to 10 centimeters above the knee. Minis should never be worn.

Rule #4 | BLACK IS ONLY APPROPRIATE FOR FUNERALS

The color black is only appropriate for funerals. You'll never see an image of the queen wearing black unless she's also attending a funeral.

In addition, members of the royal family must pack an all-black outfit when traveling in case a royal family member dies unexpectedly. If you're watching or have already seen "The Crown," you'll recall how, in the first episode, the queen travels to Kenya with her husband Prince Philip and learns of her father, King George VI's sudden death, and she doesn't have anything to wear in the color black. She had to wait on the plane while a black outfit was delivered to her because she needed to give a speech in front of a crowd. Packing a total black outfit when traveling has since become a must in a royal household.

Rule #5 | HATS ARE ONLY PERMISSIBLE DURING THE DAY

Hats are only permitted during the day and not at evening events. Women had to wear hats because women were not allowed to show their hair in public until the 1950s. As a result, they had to cover their hair with hats. Though the tradition's original purpose has changed, it still serves a symbolic purpose, and women of the royal family continue to wear hats to formal daytime events.

Hats are still worn by ladies in the royal family as part of their formal attire. At daytime events, you can see royal female members wearing a variety of beautiful hats. Young and unmarried ladies must have a nice hairstyle that is appropriate for the occasion of evening formal events. Tiaras, which are similar to engagement rings, can be worn by married women. In the royal household, you'll never see an unmarried lady wearing a tiara.

Rule #6 | BOYS UNDER AGE 8 WEAR SHORTS, NO PANTS

The royal family's little boys should wear shorts rather than pants or trousers until the age of eight. When you look at pictures of Prince George, you will notice that he is always wearing shorts, whether it is winter or summer. Interestingly, the royal family's little girls are always dressed in dresses, and you will never see the little princesses wearing pants, trousers, or shorts.

Rule #7 | COME AND GO WITH A COAT ON

Royal members of the family do not remove their coats when attending events outside, regardless of the weather. When Princess Kate is out and about, she is frequently photographed wearing a coat. Even when the weather warms up, she keeps her coat on. This is necessary in order to appear proper and polished. The royal family must leave the event in the same manner that they arrived.

Rule #8 | WHEN PHOTOGRAPHED, OPT FOR HEAVIER, STIFFER MATERIALS

When dressing for a professional photo shoot, members of the royal family choose stiffer, heavier fabrics. This ensures that their clothes are wrinkle-free when they sit down to take professional photographs. Another tip for always looking proper and polished in family photos.

Rule #9 | MAKEUP AND HAIR MINIMAL AND EFFORTLESS

Makeup and hair should be simple and uncomplicated. That means no smokey eyes, bold eyeliner, bright lip color, and hair that is neat but not overdone. Makeup and hair should be minimal and effortless, and most importantly, they should appear natural.

Rule #10 | HOLD CLUTCH IN THE LEFT HAND

The final rule is female members of the royal family must carry their clutches in their left hand so that their right hand is always free for shaking hands and greeting people. Speaking of clutches, Princess Diana uses them wisely to cover her cleavage, especially when exiting a vehicle, but it's also assumed that clutches help female royal family members avoid handshakes when they don't want to because they can hold onto their clutches and thus avoid making a handshake.
