Today, I have something truly special to share with you—a glimpse into the captivating land of Shusha in Azerbaijan, along with a tantalising traditional Azerbaijani breakfast. So, before we delve into the delectable feast, let me take you on a journey and explain why this experience was incredibly meaningful to me.
Discovering Shusha
Recently, I had the privilege of being invited by the Show Me Azerbaijan project, alongside ten international vloggers, to showcase the majestic beauty of Shusha to the world. Although I am an Azerbaijani vlogger, the aim was to introduce this culturally rich city to my predominantly international audience. Our adventure commenced from Baku, leading us through Fuzuli and Aghdam, until we finally arrived at the enchanting destination of Shusha.
The Significance of Shusha
Shusha holds a profound place in the heart of Azerbaijan. It has nurtured countless artistic talents who have contributed immensely to our culture, music, and poetry. This land exudes a unique spirit, making it a cherished gem within our nation. Personally, this trip held even greater significance for me.
Just a few days prior to the liberation of Shusha, my beloved Arabic teacher, who was not merely an educator but also my mentor, passed away. She had always spoken fondly of Shusha, recounting her upbringing and the deep connection she felt to this place. Thus, visiting Shusha felt like a profound way to honour her memory and pay homage to a land that shaped her, and in turn, shaped me.
Common Traditional Azerbaijani Breakfast Food
Below are some of the common foods that make up a traditional Azerbaijani breakfast.
1. Bread
Let's begin with the star of the show—the tender bread. Baked to perfection in a special oven, this bread boasts a tantalising aroma and a taste that is incredibly addictive. Once you take a bite, it's hard to resist its allure. The meticulous preparation and the unique flavours make this bread a must-have on every Azerbaijani breakfast table.
2. Fig Jam and Faceli
Continuing our breakfast adventure, we come across a jar of fig jam—a delightful spread that is specific to Azerbaijan due to the abundance of fig trees in the region. Its sweet and luscious taste adds a touch of indulgence to the breakfast table. Alongside the fig jam, we have faceli—a unique flatbread that resembles a croissant. Made with layers of butter, dough, and a blend of spices, faceli is a personal favourite and adds a savoury element to the breakfast feast.
3. Fresh Ingredients
No Azerbaijani breakfast is complete without an array of fresh ingredients. We have cucumbers, tomatoes, and a variety of greens, including the aromatic Reyhan (purple basil) and the refreshing combination of Nane (mint) and Tarhun. These vibrant greens, paired with the crunchy vegetables, add a burst of freshness and complement the flavours of the other dishes.
4. Honey, Cheese, and Butter
Moving on to the essentials, we find a jar of golden honey, a staple that transcends cultures. Alongside honey, we have Azerbaijani cheese—offering a choice between less salted and more salted varieties, each with its own distinct flavour and aroma. Another unique delight is Nehre butter, made by shaking milk in a special wooden box until the butter separates. Its rich, creamy texture and flavour make it a true delight. Additionally, we have Qaymaq—a rich alternative to regular cream—and a personal favourite, a mixture of cottage cheese and cream cheese with added seeds for enhanced flavour.
5. Qatiq
During my studies in the United States and Belgium, I stumbled upon a hidden treasure of Azerbaijani cuisine—Qatiq. This tangy and creamy sauce, unlike anything I had tasted before, quickly became a beloved addition to my breakfast routine. Qatiq is an Azerbaijani specialty that resembles yoghurt but possesses a truly unique flavour. Its taste cannot be compared to any other, even the closest alternative, Greek yoghurt. Qatiq adds a tangy and creamy element to the breakfast spread, perfect for those who appreciate distinctive flavours.
6. White Cherry Jam
Discover the pure delight of white cherry jam—a smooth and pit-free spread that tantalises your taste buds. This exquisite jam serves as a perfect alternative to traditional spreads, infusing your breakfast with a luscious sweetness. Whether savoured on its own or paired with a steaming cup of tea, white cherry jam is a luxurious treat that will transport you to a world of culinary bliss.
7. Citrus
No Azerbaijani breakfast is complete without a cup of aromatic black tea infused with the vibrant essence of lemon. The invigorating combination not only provides a refreshing start to your day but also adds a delightful twist to your morning routine. Embrace the zesty aroma and savour the vitamin C boost that accompanies each sip.
8. Kuku
Prepare to be enchanted by Kuku—a traditional Azerbaijani dish that graces breakfast tables with its irresistible flavours. This culinary masterpiece combines a harmonious blend of greens, eggs, and a touch of flour, cooked to perfection in a small pot. Rising to form a pie-like shape, Kuku boasts a texture reminiscent of a delightful quiche and omelette fusion. The addition of vibrant pomegranate seeds adds a burst of seasonal freshness, creating a symphony of colours and tastes that will leave you craving more.
9. Pomidor-Yumurta
Indulge in the culinary brilliance of Pomidor-Yumurta—the shining star of Azerbaijani breakfast. This simple yet satisfying dish brings together the natural sweetness of tomatoes with the richness of eggs, cooked in a unique and specific manner. Served alongside freshly baked tender bread, each bite offers a heavenly blend of flavours and textures. Whether you choose to savour it with utensils in a formal setting or embrace the authentic experience of eating with your hands among loved ones, Pomidor-Yumurta embodies the true essence of Azerbaijani cuisine.
10. A Cup of Tea
No Azerbaijani breakfast is complete without a cup of dark brewed black tea. As you sip on this aromatic elixir, feel free to add a squeeze of lemon to infuse your morning with a refreshing citrus twist. In Azerbaijani culture, tea is cherished throughout the day, a symbol of hospitality and warmth. So take your time, savour each sip, and embrace the relaxed pace of this morning ritual.
Conclusion
Azerbaijani breakfast is not just a meal; it's a celebration of togetherness and culinary delights. From the joy of breaking bread to the art of pairing flavours, each element of this morning ritual invites us to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures in life.
